Mexico’s best hotels

3. Grand Vela’s Riviera Nayarit
Grand Vela’s Riviera Nayarit touts itself as a “Beyond All Inclusive, Beyond All Compare” retreat, and guest sentiments tend to affirm the resort’s claim. Each of its one-, two- and three-bedroom suites features at least 1,000 square feet of living space and comes appointed with teak furniture imported from Bali, a Jacuzzi, a Nespresso coffee maker and a private terrace that overlooks either the ocean or the pool. Guests say that a sumptuous atmosphere pervades throughout the entire property, from the towering ceilings and serene fountain in the lobby to the memorable meals at the six gourmet restaurants. Activities at the infinity pool and on the beach – like boogie boarding and scuba diving classes – are also included in this Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, property’s all-inclusive plan. Though spa treatments will cost extra, guests say that the spa facilities are excellent and recommend indulging in a massage during your stay. Part of the Preferred brand of hotels and resorts, the Grand Vela’s Riviera Nayarit participates in the I Prefer rewards program.

4. Rosewood San Miguel de Allende
A member of the elite Rosewood hotel group, the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende has quite the reputation to uphold. Most visitors only have good things to say about the property, praising its central location in San Miguel de Allende, friendly staff members and high-end appearance. The hotel’s 67 rooms reflect the city’s colonial heritage and come outfitted with wood-beamed ceilings, handcrafted furnishings and local artwork. You’ll also have your own terrace or balcony, soaking tub and fireplace (depending on which room you book). Previous visitors highly recommend an evening drink at the Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar, where you can enjoy fantastic city views. The Mexican cuisine at 1826 Restaurant also earns high praise; however, some caution that meals here can be pricey. Sense, A Rosewood Spa receives the same critique, though serenity-seeking guests found the massages and skin treatments to be worth the extra coin. The hotel also features a variety of activities (for an extra fee), including art workshops, wine tastings and half-day horseback riding tours. If you prefer to relax without worrying about putting a dent in your wallet, spend an afternoon lounging by one of the three hotel pools.
